48 hours in València: two connected walks, not a checklist

Two days in València work best as two geographical lines. The first joins the historic centre to the Turia Garden. The second follows that green corridor towards the City of Arts and Sciences and the maritime districts. L'Albufera deserves more time than a hurried extra stop.

Day one: the historic centre

Begin around the Central Market, Lonja de la Seda and Plaça de la Ciutat de Bruges, then move through the cathedral area towards the Serranos gate. Choose interiors by their actual opening times. The Lonja explains the city's mercantile history, while L'Almoina reveals the Roman and later city below ground.

Enter the former riverbed at Serranos and walk part of the Turia Garden. It is a piece of flood history as well as a park. Finish in a neighbourhood reached comfortably from your accommodation rather than crossing the city again for a fashionable dinner list.

Day two: Turia to the sea

Continue through the garden towards the City of Arts and Sciences. Decide in advance whether to visit one ticketed interior or read the architecture outside. From there, public transport connects with Cabanyal, the marina and beaches.

What to leave out

L'Albufera combines wetlands, rice fields and villages south of the city. Give it a separate half-day or day, check park guidance and use an authorised boat operator if taking a trip. It should not be reduced to a sunset dash after two museums.

• Check current municipal transport and monument information.
• Book only timed attractions which anchor the day.
• Carry water and use shade during hot weather.
• Respect residents in the historic and maritime neighbourhoods.
